Japan has a long, revered tradition of wood working, cabinetry, and furniture making, and any of the many Japanese screen designs sold in the United States home furnishings market includes elements of that ancient tradition. Shoji screens are certainly the most familiar design to the American consumer, constructed from hinged, wood framed panels, shaded with hardy, heavy fiber "washi" paper, supported and reinforced by a grid of fine milled "window pane" wood lattice.
